What Can I do to help My Child with Math?
This is an often asked question. The answer is simple. Practice basic math facts regularly with your child! A strong ability for recognizing numbers and instant recognition of basic facts is an important prerequisite for other mathematical skills.
Kindergarten students: practice identifying, comparing and ordering numbers from 0-20
First Grade Students: practice basic addition facts with sums to 18 and subtraction facts from 18
Second Grade Students: build fluency with basic facts with sums to 18 and subtraction facts from 18
Third Grade Students: continue to reinforce basic addition and subtraction facts and begin to work on memorizing multiplication facts and division facts
Fourth and Fifth Grade Students: should be fluent in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
Fluency in math facts means that students are able to instantly recall the answer to the fact! Just a few minutes daily working with flashcards, playing computer games for facts or just saying facts orally will help students develop automatic recall of basic facts.
