NUTRITION

A significant portion of this grant relates to improving nutrition habits for students k-12.  Beyond increasing the number of students who consume fruit two or more times per day and vegetables three or more times per day, we must also work to increase the number of kids who consume at least 3 servings of milk on a daily basis.

Progress:

Received "Team Nutrition" Status -  "Team Nutrition" is a USDA Food and Service program designed to provide training and technical assistance for foodservice, nutrition education for children, and school and community support.

Applied for Gold level in the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC).  This initiative, which analyzes district lunch menus must meet the following requirements: 70% average daily participation in lunch programs, all whole grain bread products, beans or bean dishes once per week, only serve fat free or low fat 1% milk, and much more.

Became a FuelUp To Play 60 district - This initiative sponsored by the Dairy Council and National Football League (NFL) looks to increase dairy consumption in all kids.  Events are being planned and more information will follow.

STUDENTS TAKING CHARGE

Students Taking Charge is program sponsored by the Genesee Valley BOCES (GVB).  The purpose of this program is to allow students to be active in creating healthier schools.  Through this program students will discuss wellness issues in the school district, create surveys to collect data, analyze data and work to create policies and procedures that could be implemented into the district.  Selected students from the Penn Yan Middle School and Penn Yan Academy will work with student council, the director of food services, and the district wellness committee throughout the process.
