GRANT GOALS
1. Increase the number of students who engage in 60 minutes of daily physical activity
2. Increase the percentage of students who achieve age-appropriate cardiovascular fitness
3. Increase the number of students who consume fruit two or more times per day and vegetables three or more times per day
Physical Education teachers and students in all three buildings have been trained on the new virtual reality Expresso bikes and Trixter X Dream bikes. This equipment uses virtual settings which enable students to take simulated rides through the mountains or along the coastline. Ask your son or daughter if they have registered and track their progress ( http://www.expresso.net/ ) on a local or national level.
A significant portion of this grant relates to improving nutrition habits for students k-12. Beyond increasing the number of students who consume fruit two or more times per day and vegetables three or more times per day, we must also work to increase the number of kids who consume at least 3 servings of milk on a daily basis.

DATA COLLECTION WEEK
On March 5, 2012 the second of five data collection weeks will begin. Due to the number of students in the Penn Yan and Dundee Central School Districts, not all students will be completing each aspect of the data collection week. Students in grades K-12 from both districts will be randomly selected and notified on the first day of the data collection week. The three items listed below will be completed throughout the week:
Students wearing daily pedometers and recording steps (Sampled students)
Completing surveys regarding fruit and vegetable consumption (Sampled students)
Completing 15 meter or 20 meter shuttle runs (Everyone)
STUDENTS TAKING CHARGE
Students Taking Charge is program sponsored by the Genesee Valley BOCES (GVB). The purpose of this program is to allow students to be active in creating healthier schools. Through this program students will discuss wellness issues in the school district, create surveys to collect data, analyze data and work to create policies and procedures that could be implemented into the district. Selected students from the Penn Yan Middle School and Penn Yan Academy will work with student council, the director of food services, and the district wellness committee throughout the process.
