The Penn Yan Elementary Parent-Teacher Group

Please feel free to join us this year, we appreciate and need your input and assistance! We have monthly meetings in room #142, check out the school calendar for details. Penn Yan Elementary Parent Teacher Group (PYE PTG) Membership Drive 2010-11. The Penn Yan Elementary Parent Teacher Group (PYE PTG) would like to take this opportunity to welcome the families of all PYE students and to introduce ourselves.

Officers for 2010-11 School Year:
Lisa Jenkins - President
Marcie Ware - Vice President
Judy Moravec - Treasurer
Marietta Hollister - Co-Treasurer
Jessica Marble - Secretary

Our Purpose: To promote cooperation and understanding between the home and school. To acquaint parents with the school programs and its philosophy. To raise funds for projects which benefit the children, the school and the teachers. To provide annual scholarships for 2 (two) graduating seniors.

Membership: Any person living in the Penn Yan Central School District may become a member. Dues are $1.00 per family per school year. Open meetings are held monthly. These meetings offer the opportunity for parents, teachers and administrators to discuss past, current and future issues and to develop activities and programs for the students of PYE. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 10th at 6:00 pm in The Parent Resource Center, Rm. #142. Check the school calendar for additional meeting dates.

Committees: We have several committees that are active throughout the school year and volunteers are always needed. Please see the information on the reverse side that describes our activities and the volunteer opportunities associated with them. However, you don’t have to volunteer to be a member!

Classroom Contest: The class with the most membership forms returned will be displaying the PTG banner outside their classroom and receive a surprise treat. Last year the winning class received a pizza party. Please fill out the Membership form and return it to school with your child before October 15th. (We only need one form per family not per child.) Classroom teachers will be collecting forms for us. Please check all areas where you would be interested in helping out. Someone will be contacting you as the activity approaches. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Opportunities:
Book Bug Bins: Boxes of children’s books are maintained at various locations within our community for children to borrow and return. All books are donated to us. Volunteers are needed to keep the boxes filled (restocked monthly).

Book Fair: PYE PTG holds two book fairs each school year. Children are able to attend the fairs with their class and a “family night” is held from 5 – 7 pm during each fair. A variety of books from picture to advanced chapter books are available. Volunteers are needed to help teachers and students select and purchase their books. We have shifts available during the school day and at family night.

HUBBA Day: Hubba Day is held in June of each year for students to enjoy a day of fun, sun, games and activities. Activities are planned by the Hubba Coordinator and students. Volunteers are needed to assist at sign in, game stations, ride stations and clean up. This is a full day activity for students and volunteers.
Library: Assist the librarians as needed during the school day.

Parent RepresentativesBuilding Instruction Council (BIC): Collaborate with teachers and administrators on instructional issues. Meetings are held monthly prior to the start of the school day.
Interview Committee: Assist in the interviewing process for open positions at PYE.

Picture Day: Student picture days are held in the fall and spring. Volunteers are needed to collect order envelopes and to help children get ready for their picture.

Roller-Skating: Parties are held one Friday each month in two sessions. Grades 3, 4 & 5 skate after school (3:15 – 5 pm) with Pre-K through 2nd grade skating from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Volunteers are needed at each session for the concession (which offers snack items, pizza, cookies and water) and to supervise the students as they skate.

Spring Egg Hunt: Each spring we hold an egg hunt for all PYE students. Donations of candy, plastic eggs and zip-close plastic bags are requested. Volunteers are needed to fill the eggs with candy (filling night is held the week prior and usually only takes an hour or so). Last year we filled over 4000 eggs! We also need help the day of our hunt to “hide” the eggs, supervising students, and clean up.

Special Events: Assist at new events and activities for the students.

Winter Bazaar: The Winter Bazaar is our annual holiday event held in December. Students attend the bazaar with their class and pick out two gift items for two special people. Volunteers wrap and tag the gifts for each student. Donations of gift items, tape and wrapping paper come from the community and our students’ families. Volunteers are needed to sort items. Sorting is usually done on two evenings prior to the event.

In Class Volunteer for Reading Program: Our teachers need assistance within their classrooms during their reading instruction time. The role you fulfill will be determined by the teacher. Some possible roles could be reading to and with students, or supervising an independent center. (download the membership form on the flyers page to join our group)
