Middle School Students Grow Lettuce for School Lunches

Middle school students are putting classroom learning into action through a new hands-on growing project.

The PYMS Agriculture/Technology 8 classroom received a Grow Tower aeroponics growing system through the “Rooted in Learning” grant. Over the past month, students planted lettuce, checked pH levels, added the right amount of fertilizer and watched the plants grow.

Students recently picked their first harvest. The lettuce will be used in tossed salads served as part of middle school lunches.

This project gives students a chance to learn about agriculture, technology and healthy food choices in a real-world way. It also shows how hands-on learning can support the health and well-being of students across the school.
