PYCSD Earns Friend of Extension Award

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County recently awarded Penn Yan Central School District with the Friend of Extension Award for their hard work and dedication in the Rooted in Learning initiative.

The initiative focuses on connecting students with local agriculture, fresh food and hands-on learning experiences, helping them understand the importance of good nutrition, sustainability and where their food comes from.

Students at the elementary school and middle school participate by planting and maintaining food gardens, using classroom hydroponic grow towers, utilizing composting, and taking part in interactive garden clubs. The initiative brings agriculture into the classroom and allows students to see where their food comes from, from start to finish.

Food Service Director, Dana Burton, accepted the award on behalf of PYCSD for her exceptional effort in maintaining the gardens and ensuring students were involved and educated throughout the entire process.

The award plaque reads “Friend of Extension 2026 awarded to Penn Yan Central School District with special thank you to Dana Burton, Greg Baker and Kourteney Guenther in recognition of your support of CCE educational programs.”

Moving forward, the district’s Food Service Department has committed to maintaining the school garden and related activities, solidifying the district’s commitment to student wellness and agricultural learning. The district also plans to expand similar learning opportunities at Penn Yan Academy by redesigning the courtyard at the high school featuring edible gardens and an outdoor learning space.
